Now I'm packing!!

We found it! We found the perfect pack!! I'm 95 pounds and you are only supposed to carry 1/3 of your body weight in gear. That allows me roughly 30-35 pounds...and that includes the backpack. External frame packs weigh, on average, 4-6 pounds unpacked and internal frame packs weigh 5-7 pounds. Knowing this, I decided I wanted to go with something unique...something designed with ultralight camping in mind.

After my mom did all the research online, we discovered the Mariposa Plus by Gossamer Gear. http://www.gossamergear.com/ Believe it or not, it weighs an amazing 22.3 ounces!! It is made of 70 denier urethane-coated ripstop nylon much like the material used to make parasails and parachutes. Gossamer Gear was started by Glen Van Peski with the Boy Scout in mind. He had backpacked growing up, but when he became involved with his son's boy scout troop, he created a revolutionary lightweight backpack for his son to use. This marked the beginning of GVP Gear while his son had lots of opportunities to test different packs during the creation process. Gossamer Gear is still a family-owned, customer-focused company now based out of Texas. They were very helpful when picking the appropriate sized pack. When I emailed the company to ask some questions, the President Grant Sible personally responded, answered all of my questions and even offered me a $30 discount on the Mariposa Plus because I was a boy scout. Gossamer Gear was great to work with and my new pack is totally awesome!

And so it begins.....

Since you carry everything with you on these weeklong camping trips, I need lightweight, minimal equipment. They say we even wear the same pair of underwear all week and change into our extra pair the day we come home...that way we're fresh and clean for our families. We carry in all our food, our tent, and sleeping bag. We also carry out all our trash in order to comply with the "Leave No Trace" Boy Scout philosophy.

Here's a list of the clothing I'll take...
2-4 pairs of lightweight hiking socks
2 pairs of underwear
2 quick dry shirts
2 pairs of zip off pants
1 pair of shorts
Rain gear
Hat
Waterproof hiking boots
Extra tennis shoes for in camp

Today is the first day of the REI Anniversary Sale. http://www.rei.com/ We found some great zip off pants...the REI Sahara Convertible pants. The pants are made with quick-drying UPF 30 material. We also bought the legendary spork and a couple of quick-dry towels. The leaders also recommended the Sham-Wow or a swimmer's towel.

It's Time to Start Planning!!

I'm finally old enough to go on the High Adventure trip this year! Tonight at Scouts, there was a parent meeting to talk about all the gear we'd need so we can go to the Black Hills for a week and survive. My mom got really excited. The planning is her favorite part and since she loves internet shopping she can hardly wait to start finding sweet gear at super prices. I'm excited, too. I need so much stuff like a backpack, tent, lightweight sleeping bag, and hiking boots. The gear list goes on and on, and I don't have most of the things on it since the longest camping trip I've been on is a weekender. This trip is going to be AWESOME!
